The Most Important Tip for a Professional Santa Claus

Your smile will book you, or cost you jobs. Your smile will attract parents and put children at ease or it will do the opposite. As Santa, your SMILE is, or at least can be, your greatest asset… or not!

In one of my classes I mentioned how I practiced smiling every day for weeks… my face was sore!

In addition to practicing to have a big full smile, we need to remember to be quick to smile and you hold at least a slight smile even when we are at rest, or think no one is looking.

By the way, an additional benefit to being so quick to smile is you will be happier… I used to think that we smiled when we’re happy… I now know that the reverse is also true… we are happy when we smile.

So here are 3 more quick tips…

  1. Somehow, either trim or train the mustache hair away and up from your mouth… seeing your upper lip is a good thing.
  2. Smile with your whole face… your cheeks & eyes should smile with your lips.
  3. Santa Tim Connaghan teaches the “yeah” technique. By saying the word “yeah”, and having the others in the photo say it at the same time the photographer can get some great photos.

Of course, there are many more things we can do to consistently have a million dollar smile but these will get you started.

Also, just a quick reminder… GOLD Membership for the remainder of 2016 is FREE when you enroll now for 2017 GOLD Membership!

Have a great week!

Skoozi Santa Claus Video Chat

Video chatting with Santa Claus has never been easier. Santa's learn how you can bring smiles to children and families across the country and around the world through the Skoozi App for Santa Claus.

It's explained in this video. By the way, at the begining of the video I say it's November 11th, this was actually recorded on November 9th.

Santa Claus Behind the Scenes at Paramount Studio

Friday, I shot a segment as Santa Claus for a TV show at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. Once my part was “in the can” I was reminded of a reality that I became VERY familiar with during all my years as a professional speaker.

In this case I was contacted by one of the shows Associate Producers who initially asked about my availability, my experience, my wardrobe, etc. After speaking with me she submitted me (my photos & my fee requirements) up the line. The next day I was asked to submit some more photos, this time of my Santa sack. Shortly after I was contacted saying they would like to use me as their Santa.

At this point these 2 people were, in a sense, on the hook for my performance. Both reported to people paramount-pass-with-photoup the line, it was their job to make sure that the show had a Santa that met the expectations of the Producer and they had signed off on ME.

Before the shoot Associate Producers were very nice and incredibly helpful and complementary of me, my look & personality… but I could feel a bit of anxiety, concern.

After my segment was shot there was a collective “sigh of relief”, whew, he was GREAT!

As a professional speaker, I was always aware that my performance would have a direct impact of the person or people who brought me in.

TIP- Do all you can to HELP THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE for bringing you in to BE CONFIDENT THAT YOU WILL DO A GOOD JOB FOR THEM! They see your performance as a direct reflection on how well they did their job.

Santa Claus on World Series Chrysler Commercial

I had no idea the commercial was going to air during game 7 of the World Series.

I was in the kitchen cleaning up the microwave after I had accidentally exploded a spaghetti squash in it, that’s long story for another time.

When I sat back down and picked up my phone it was exploding with both text & Facebook messages. People from across the country were saying they just saw me on the World Series. WHAT!?

HERE’S THE TIP…

I was surprised, (happily surprised, but surprised just the same) that the commercial aired so early. I had on my calendar for next week “SEO for Chrysler commercial”. Meaning that I was going to create a page in my website that would hopefully appear near the top of Google when people searched on “who is the Santa in the Chrysler commercial”, or “who is the manager in the Chrysler commercial”.

Now who knows if that will get me any more business, but it might.

Over the years I have optimized my SantaEd.com site for many, many keywords including “Santa Claus 3rd Street Promenade”. This is a high-profile event and I know for a fact that I have had several bookings as a result of people finding me on Google after seeing me at that event.

So the tip is to optimize a page, NOW, in advance, of any high profile appearances you will be making this year.

Remember, there is an entire class with step-by-step, 100% non-technical instructions on how to optimize your website. It’s not difficult, it produces great results and to make it work for this season you MUST get started ASAP!

In fact this page right here may show up on “who is the Santa in the Chrysler commercial”, or “who is the manager in the Chrysler commercial" in a few days. 🙂

Becoming “Sought-After” as Santa

Here’s the tip of the week- Do things during the season to make you more “sought-after” after the season.

If you’re like me you LOVE being Santa, perhaps the worst part of being Santa is that the season is just too short. That’s the way I felt for years. In fact, after Christmas I was always a bit sad.

A performer friend of mine said it was very common for performers to feel that way after a show ended its run. They even have names for it, they call it "Post Show Blues" or "Post Show Depression".

Well I haven’t had that feeling for the past few years… here’s why.

I implemented a strategy to become “sought-after” as a Santa.

Part of my “sought-after” strategy is to make appearances at high profile events, things like parades, community Tree Lighting ceremonies and other community events. I suggest to the organizers that they invite the media to the events, and I let them know that I would be happy to talk with the media before or after events.

By being “high profile” other people looking for a Santa become aware of you. They seek you out. They don’t want A Santa; they want THAT Santa.

People start looking for you… YOU are sought after.

Because of doing all the things in my “sough-after” strategy I now get to be Santa much more often throughout the year. In fact, this year I had my first Santa appearance at a birthday party in February!

I’m still sorry to see the season end… although I AM ready for a break.

No more Post Show Blues… I know that the show will start again soon.

So again, this week’s tip is “Do things during this season to make you more “sought-after” after the season.”

You can learn many more ways to become “sought-after”, and to be found, in the GOLD Member classes.

Fee Integrity – Santa Claus School Tip

Fee Integrity

By being compassionate and or by believing that earning “less money” is better than earning “no money at all” we can be tempted to negotiate or fees.

I don’t negotiate fees and here’s why…

If I agree to accept a lower fee I feel that I have essentially over charged the people who paid more. This just doesn’t work for me.

Of course, we can have different rates for non-profit organizations, or for days of the week, times of day and anything else we want… my point is that if we charge one person one rate and another person another rate and there is no “reason” for the difference we are out of integrity… at least that’s the way I see it.

During my many years as a professional speaker this was continually reiterated to me by speaker’s bureaus and agents.

Just to be 100% transparent I post my rates on my website and then I charge the rates I post.

If I’m asked to discount my fee I explain that it just wouldn’t be fair to my clients who pay my standard rate. I assure them I would do an excellent job for them but if my fee is outside of their budget let them know that there less expensive Santa’s in the area and I encourage them to post on GigSalad & GigMasters. I even try to help them find a Santa if I can.

You can find more on this topic, and many other tips, in Class 1 “How to Set Up Your Santa Business to Maximize Your Fun & Income”

Add MORE Photo Shoots to Your Schedule

In addition to traditional photo studios I’m sure there are many professional photographers in your area who DO NOT have a studio. These are often photographers who specialize in wedding and graduation photos.

Here’s the idea…

Approach them about taking photos with you and families OUTDOORS.

Just like many graduation photos that are taken in local parks or other interesting places, you can introduce the idea of having the photographer set-up photo shoots with Santa and these fun outdoor locations. Often these photos can be taken EARLY IN THE SEASON.

Get on Google, find some local photographers, make some phone calls to introduce yourself and the idea… add just a little bit more joy to the world… while earning adding a bit more income to your Santa business.

Allowing Santa to Make You a Better Person

Santa Claus has given me, and I expect you, a HUGE gift.

When we “be” Santa, whether it’s at a Christmas party, a mall, or when we’re walking down the aisle in a grocery store or sitting in a restaurant… a part of us shines. The best part of us. We smile and we’re friendly. In that moment we are living examples of the best of human nature.

Here’s my tip…

Expand it. Be Santa even when nobody’s looking.

Let the friendliness, the joy, the jolliness, the love and compassion expand in your life.

Several years ago I decided to allow Santa to lead my way. I allowed Santa, at least my vision of Santa, to permeate my entire self. I have “used” Santa to peruse new business ventures, to teach and act and perform. I’ve also used Santa to be a nicer, kinder, more considerate person in ALL that I do.

Santa has given me the incredible gift of being a better person.

So again, embody the spirit of Santa Claus in all you do, even when no one is looking… because of course He does see us when we’re sleeping and He knows when we’re awake so let’s be good… for GOODNESS sake.
